Occasionally scars enlarge spontaneously to form firm, smooth, hard growths called keloids. Keloids may be uncomfortable or itchy, and may be much larger than the original wound. While Keloids scars are usually just a cosmetic problem and never become malignant, they may be uncomfortable or cause embarrassment if they are in a visible location. We may recommend laser scar removal or surgical removal, depending on the condition of the scar or keloid.
Traumatic scars form after injuries that leave jagged or rough wounds to heal, or major surgeries that require large incisions. These scars may appear puffy, uneven or may have discoloration for months or even years. These can often be improved by various cosmetic dermatology treatments including fractional laser resurfacing, which can fade the appearance and literally retexture the skin to make it look and feel smoother.
As wounds heal, scar tissue forms, which at first is often red and somewhat prominent. Over several months, a scar usually becomes flat and pale. If there is substantial tension on a wound, the healing area is remains thicker than usual. This is known as a hypertrophic scar. Hypertrophic scars can respond will to fractional laser resurfacing, which will even out the texture of the skin, making it smooth and virtually un-noticeable.
