Earlobe Repair Surgery

Earlobe repair and earlobe reshaping are minor cosmetic surgical procedures used to repair lacerated, stretched, or completely torn earlobes. Patients Medical offers earlobe repair and reshaping procedures that allow patients to display their earlobes without being self-conscious.

In most cases, earlobe lacerations and tears are the result of inadvertently tugged or pulled earrings, or tears can be accumulated slowly through years of wearing heavy earrings. Over the past decade, many teens and young adults have participated in ear gauging, which drastically stretches the skin in the ear lobe. Unfortunately, unlike traditional piercings, skin elasticity cannot restore gauged earlobes to their original shape. Once they are no longer wearing low gauge jewelry, adults often desire earlobe reshaping and repair to restore their normal earlobe appearance.

Who is a good candidate for earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair is a simple, in-office procedure and does not require general anesthesia. Anyone who has lacerated, stretched, or torn earlobes is a candidate. We also treat clients who feel their earlobes are excessively large, or long, as the result of heredity. Our plastic surgeon can reshape the earlobes and discuss other surgical options, such as ear pinning, that may also be of interest.

What is involved during earlobe repair and reshaping procedures?

Patients interested in having their earlobes repaired or reshaped will visit with the doctor during a pre-procedure consultation. During the consultation, the patient can tell the doctor what they would like to have corrected. The doctor will examine the earlobe(s) in question and make recommendations as to how the repair or reshaping will take place.

The process of reshaping or repairing an earlobe is very straightforward. In most cases, an earlobe can be repaired in about 15 to 30 minutes. It is done here in our office by a board certified plastic surgeon. Earlobe repairs are done using a straight local anesthetic, and do not require sedation or general anesthesia so patients can drive themselves home. Repair procedures vary depending on the type of reshaping required.

Simple procedures: If the laceration is relatively minor, the doctor will simple remove the tissue around the edges of the tear in order to provide a better healing foundation. Then he will use a layered closure technique to suture the tissue back together.

Complex procedures: In situations where the laceration runs completely through the earlobe, ear gauging corrections, or for the reshaping of naturally large or long earlobes, the procedure is more complex. Even so, it can still be done using local anesthetic. For these procedures, the doctor will need to create a skin flap as a part of the tissue repair in order to give the new earlobe a solid shape and structure.

What is the recovery time for earlobe surgery?

The recovery time for both procedures is relatively similar. The ear will be bandaged and may hurt, itch, or be uncomfortable for the first few days. By the end of the first week, the discomfort should fade. Patients will return approximately seven days after the procedure for a follow-up and to have the sutures removed.

Most patients want to know if their ears can be pierced again; in most cases, they can. Usually, we advise patients to wait at least two to six months, depending on their procedure and healing. Failure to heed the doctor's recommendations can result in further tissue damage.

Holistic Post-Operative Care

Whenever the body is healing, it is important to observe healthy diet and lifestyle habits in order to minimize the risk of infection, facilitate the healing process, and reduce inflammation and scarring.

The doctor may recommend pre and post-operative treatments that will help speed and improve the healing process, including:

These treatments enhance the body's recovery time and reduce inflammation and scarring. Eating a nutritious diet and honoring the doctor's post-operative instructions will also ensure your body is able to heal as quickly and comfortably as possible.
