Liposuction

Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a relatively simple surgical technique used to slim and reshape specified areas of the body by removing excess fatty deposits in between the skin and the muscle. Liposuction helps improve patient's body contours and ultimately, self-image. Despite healthy lifestyle habits, some individuals may still have disproportionate body contours due to genetics or other factors.

Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, a cannula, which is connected to a suction pump and inserted into the specified area through a small opening in the skin.
Liposuction surgery can be used to treat fat deposits in many parts of the body including:

  • Abdomen
  • Ankles
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Thighs

Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and is not a substitute for healthy eating habits and physical activity. The best candidates for Liposuction are individuals with stubborn areas of fat who have already tried other means of weight loss and exercise.

Liposuction Preparation

Before liposuction patients will have a consultation and exam with one of our qualified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons who may or may not:

  • Request laboratory testing or a medical evaluation
  • Make recommendations for medications or adjustments to current medications
  • Request that patient stops smoking prior to surgery
  • Advise patient to avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.

Prior to having Liposuction a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon will instruct patients on:

  • What to do on the day of the procedure
  • The use of anesthesia during your liposuction
  • Post-operative care and follow-up

At Patients Medical, Liposuction procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. Your Plastic surgeon will advise you to arrange for someone to accompany you and be available to take you home after the procedure. They may also advise to arrange for someone to stay with you for at least the first night following the procedure.

What happens during my liposuction procedure?

  1. Anesthesia will be administered for your comfort during the liposuction procedure. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

  2. Liposuction is performed through a tiny incision made by your Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon.

  3. Sterile saline solution will be infused to decrease bleeding.

  4. A thin cannula will be inserted through the incision to loosen the excess fat deposits using a back and forth motion.

  5. The dislodged fat will then be suctioned out using a surgical pump or syringe fixed to the cannula.

Liposuction recovery

Once completed, your Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon may recommend using compression garment or bandages to cover the treatment area and help control swelling. Your C osmetic Plastic Surgeon will give you specialized instructions on caring for the site(s) of the procedure, medications that need to be applied or taken orally to speed healing and reduce the possibility of infection, and when you will need to follow up. If you experience any of the following after your procedure is complicated, seek medical attention immediately: shortness of breath, chest pains, unusual heart beats.

The practice of medicine and surgical procedures such as Liposuction is not an exact science. While good results are expected, no guarantee pertaining to results can be made. While some patients achieve optimal results with one procedure, in some cases a second procedure may be recommended.

Liposuction Results

It may take a few months for swelling to fully subside after liposuction. Your improved body contour will be visible once swelling and fluid retention dissipates. Results can be maintained with healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Significant weight gain after the procedure can alter the effects of the results.
