Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopathic Medicine includes the study of all branches of medicine and additional studies of surgery. It is a medicine based on the belief that disease and dysfunction in the body is mainly manifested in the musculoskeletal system. Doctors of Osteopathy are trained to use the musculoskeletal system to diagnose and treat multiple diseases, avoiding medication which may later have unfriendly side effects.

A large principle of Osteopathic Medicine is that the human body innately holds self-healing and regulating abilities. Doctors of Osteopathy are trained to uniquely develop treatment plans for each individual patient, based upon what the body and the patient tells them.

Osteopathic Medicine is not only used to treat multiple diseases and abnormalities in the body, but it is also used for prevention and for promotion of general wellness.

Andrew Taylor Still, who fathered osteopathic medicine, described doctors who study this medicine in this quote: “An osteopath is only a human engineer, who should understand all the laws governing his engine and thereby master disease”.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a treatment used by Osteopathic physicians to examine and treat the body. Osteopathic physiatrists use their hands to examine a patient’s back, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints for signs of an injury, impaired function, or disease.

Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) have a highly developed understanding of the relationship between the body’s function and the body’s structure.

Many patients who choose to see an Osteopathic physiatrist are coming in for pain, either acute or chronic pain, or discomfort from an existing condition. The goal of OMT is to relieve pain and discomfort and avoid prescription pain medication and/or surgical intervention by reducing things such as muscle tension and joint restriction.

Osteopathic Manipulation can be helpful for:
