What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. The disease was first identified in 1975 in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, United States, and it is most common in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central regions of the country, but it can occur in other areas of the world as well.

Symptoms of Lyme disease can vary and may develop in stages. Early symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the joints, heart, and nervous system, resulting in more severe symptoms.

Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics, and early treatment is important to prevent complications. To prevent tick bites, it is recommended to wear protective clothing and use tick repellent when spending time in wooded or grassy areas.
