Presyncope

Presyncope is a feeling of lightheadedness or faintness, which may be accompanied by a drop in blood pressure or heart rate.

Symptoms

  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Blurred vision.
  • Palpitations or rapid heartbeat
  • Sweating or clamminess
  • Feeling like you might faint.

Causes

  • Dehydration or electrolyte imbalances
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Medications that lower blood pressure or cause dehydration
  • Cardiovascular conditions such as arrhythmias or heart valve problems
  • Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis

Types

  • Vasovagal syncope: caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure, often triggered by a stressful or emotional event.
  • Orthostatic hypotension: caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up from a seated or lying position.
  • Cardiac syncope: caused by a problem with the heart, such as arrhythmia or heart valve disease.

Testing

  • Blood tests to evaluate blood sugar levels, electrolyte balance, and liver and kidney function
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to evaluate heart function and detect arrhythmias.
  • Tilt-table test to evaluate blood pressure changes during position changes.

Conventional treatment

  • Treatment for presyncope depends on the underlying cause. For example, treatment for orthostatic hypotension may include increasing fluid and salt intake, wearing compression stockings, and taking medications to raise blood pressure.

Functional medicine treatments

  • Identifying and addressing underlying triggers such as food sensitivities, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances.
  • Supporting the body's natural healing processes through dietary and lifestyle changes.

IV drip therapy

  • IV therapy may help to replenish fluid and electrolyte imbalances and provide support for the body's natural healing processes.

Recommended supplements for support

  • Electrolyte replacement supplements
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D3
  • Iron
  • Magnesium

It is important to work with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause of presyncope and develop an appropriate treatment plan. In some cases, presyncope may be a sign of a serious underlying condition and should be evaluated by a medical professional.
